Finding a window company

Window companies are everywhere! Many companies may have developed good reputations for product quality but may lack in service. Others may have excellent products but at a price that doesn’t seem fair. There are a lot of options in companies in Denver, and not all contractors are out there to rip you off or worse.

We hope we can show you how we’re a great company but we also want to help you, no matter who you’ve selected. Here are some tips to help you find a great company!

  • Search Google for ‘Company Complaint’ and ‘Product Complaint’ – There will likely be a few results no matter who you’ve choose. The important thing here is to read through reviews and take a honest evaluation to the complaint. Problems can come up, but the best companies will turn a problem or issue into a chance to WOW their customers.
  • Check the BBB – Denver’s BBB can be found here: http://denver.bbb.org/
  • Ask for a referral and CALL them. Contractors will always give out their favorite customers for referrals but you’ll get the chance to hear the ‘best they have to offer’. If you call but aren’t even marginally impressed with the referral, what would their other customer experiences have been like? If this is their favorite customer, how will they treat you?
  • Get competing quotes, and look at the overall value and try to compare product features as best you can. If a sales pitch deals with a part of the window you don’t know how to compare, tell them what product you’ve already seen. Most of the time you’ll get a somewhat bias but truthful answer and comparison.

We hope this helps you find the BEST window and contractor for your home. Contact us if we can be of any service to you or if you have any questions, we’re happy to help!

Windows that maximize air flow

So far this year, I have not yet turned on the A/C in my home! With excel’s recent adjustments to bill at a increased rate for electricity above a set number of kilowatt hours, keeping my A/C off half way into June has really helped to keep my bills at their low levels into early summer.

One thing that helps maintain my home’s temperature is the highly effective air flow directed by my casement windows. Casement open windows are the familiar cranking type window more common in higher price homes in Denver.

Casement Window Crank

Casement windows open from a hinge that swivels the entire window surface wide open. These windows offer the greatest airflow available in any window design. Placing these in a open state will help to catch air flowing around your house and direct it throughout your home. When used in later afternoon and evening hours when the air is cooling, it allows you to quickly bring your home down to outside air temperatures. Even if you can’t make it through the afternoon when your home is reaching it’s highest temperature, using these windows at night can help eliminate much of the time your A/C would spend cooling the home back to lower temperatures in the evening and maintaining those temperatures through the night and early morning.

Contact us today if you would like to take advantage of this simple but energy friendly window option!

Old Aluminum Windows

Littleton has a large number of homes built from late 1970 through early 1990′s that were built with metal framed windows. Specifically, between Pierce and Wadsworth from east to west and Chatfield Dr. all the way to Bowles Ave.

Denver, CO – It's a new year!

2010 is gone and 2011 has finally arrived. After two years of industry growth or at least stability, in large part due to a $1,500 tax credit from the fed, we’re back to business without the incentives this industry has been recently accustomed to.

So, with the 2010 saying goodbye, and 2011 here to stay – what does this mean for consumers and window professionals? Well, it’s certainly going to be harder. Consumers will need to buy windows for all of the reasons they’ve always bought them, but now without the added bonus of savings offered by the federal government. Contractors and professionals will need to return to some of their roots when showing the value energy efficient windows can still have for home owners.

In truth, the tax credits will have a lingering effect that continues to help the industry. Because of the strict requirements for efficiency – technologies that were less common and higher end are now more mainstream and overall – the industry windows being produced have increased in total efficiency from where they might have been. Consumers gain the better performing windows and installers now know where the clear standard is for windows that perform high enough to be considered ‘energy efficient’.

We also think the new year is a good time to look for new ways to help local businesses and small businesses around the country. We’ve began a new project and are excited to see it grow in the new year. Window Realm is our new community website dedicated to window professionals. In a time when the replacement window industry may see declines, we hope this community can serve to limit a downturn in business and even continue to drive increased business in this new year.

Window Realm also features consumer facing information and resources. The Colorado Replacement Windows section, we hope, will be a great new resource for consumers looking for information. If you have time, check it out!

Thank you for a great 2010 from Denver Window Info.com and we’re looking forward to whatever challenges the new year brings!

Replacement window checklist

Here is a helpful checklist of all the things you should know before buying replacement windows this year.

  • Do your windows qualify for the 2010 $1,500 tax credit? The tax credit requires the U-Factor and SHGC ratings for you window to be a .30 or less. Check with your contractor to ensure that your windows meet the needs for the tax credit. Keep in mind, the windows must be installed before 01/01/2011 to be eligible.
  • Do the windows have Low-E glass? Low-E window glass is to energy efficient windows as the Rocky Mountains are to Colorado. Don’t buy new windows without this option for your windows if you hope to same energy on your summer cooling bills.
  • Do the windows feel tough? Cheaply made windows often experience a shorter lifespan. If your contractor has offered to show you samples, take this chance to grab the movable portion of the unit and give it a good strong jiggle to see how much play is in the window. While some windows will have slight give and shift somewhat, the best windows won’t budge.
  • Are the windows backed by a strong company with a warranty to match? It’s always important to consider that even the best manufacturing processes will have ‘lemons’ from time to time, make sure you’re covered!
  • Identify your goals and buy a window to meet them! For example; Are you replacing a window because it’s fogged/damaged or otherwise needs replacing? If you’re buying out of necessity, you should examine the longer term goals for your home at this time. If you are upgrading a few windows, be sure to buy a model of window that has been around for years and is still a top seller for the manufacturer. Just ask your contractor. This is important to make sure the line is not discontinued before you can complete the rest of your home.
  • Know your contractor! Denver’s got a lot of options in window contractors. You’ll want to check with the BBB to see if they have any complaints, search for ‘Contractor name complaint’ on google to find if anyone has posted a bad experience with the contractor. Finally, if you’re unsure, ask for several references and call them – you’d be amazed how quickly you can find out about the success or failure from a company’s references.
  • Shop around – It’s always important to look at competing windows for quality, features and prices. If you do your diligence you’re likely to hone in on the window that fits your needs and pocket book best. This ensures that you’re the happiest with your purchase, and that’s a good thing even for contractors.  Don’t feel bad about spending some time with several companies, they’re used to it and in the end it’s in their best interest to serve their customers needs.

Rebates running out – time is short

The opportunity is running out for homeowners to use their Federal Tax Credit. As the year is nearing it’s end, window contractors will be booking months ahead. If you’re planning to purchase your windows and receive the $1,500 tax credit, all windows must be installed by December 31st of this year.

Douglas county rebate

Update:
The Douglas county tax credit has now expired. The county pool of money for this rebate has been exhausted. Don’t forget that the federal $1,500 credit is soon to follow, expiring on 12/31/10. Windows must be installed before the end of the year to apply.
