Obama state of union – Window Companies

January 29th, 2010

When President Obama addressed the nation in his last State of the Union address, he mentioned a Philadelphia window manufacturer as proof of the stimulus act at work. And for the most part, many companies effected by the tax credits would agree. The Window industry, has certainly seen a boom in business and is looking forward to that continuing.

“Talk to the window manufacturer in Philadelphia who said he was skeptical of the Recovery Act until he added two shifts due to the business it created,” Obama said.

Although he didn’t mention Northeast Building Products by name, DWM confirmed that it was in fact the Philadelphia-based company with Fran Levin, its executive vice president. Levin says she received a call from the White House yesterday requesting permission for the company to be mentioned.

Following the address last night, she received a call from CNN and Northeast Building Products president Alan Levin appeared on CNN this morning at 11 a.m.

The Federal Tax Credit has certainly had an impact on the replacement window industry in 2010. While it has been in effect since 2009, many consumers have become aware of it this year due to more exposure in the market. As a San Antonio Window Replacementcompany, the Tax Credit has figured greatly into our sales equation. Most homeowners we visit with know about the credit and automatically ask that the windows we quote be tax credit compliant.

I believe that the Tax Credit is helping to enable more replacement window projects, but if consumers don’t have money to spend, no tax credit will get them off of center. I am happy that the credit is in place, I like the stringent requirements for window performance that it requires, and I believe we will be better off for the work that it has created. My one worry is that it is creating a false economy with replacement windows. Once it expires in 2010, what then? Without the incentive of a tax credit out there, customers may pull back on projects. It is my hope that this is not the case, but we will have to see as we roll into 2011.
